Pat Durham and his Durham Racing Crew
|
Pat Durham, a first time participant at The Texas Mile brought his crew of 30+ people including his wife, three daughters, potential sons-in-law, brothers, sisters, cousins, parents and friends to the May 2011 Texas Mile. They were easily spotted throughout the weekend enthusiastically darting around in with their bright orange Durham Racing crew shirts. Pat made a total of 8 passes with a best speed of 177.8 mph on his Suzuki Hayabusa with a stock motor and stage one turbo setup. With a little more seat time, Pat hopes go north of 200 mph at the October 2011 Texas Mile. Looks like several fans of The Texas Mile were made at their first visit, because now his youngest daughter wants to race her mother’s car, his two potential son-in-laws want to run their vehicles and a coworker is bringing his Nitrous R32 VW to the October 2011 Texas Mile!
George Kakaletris, owner of ICS Performance in Stamford, CT was surfing the internet one day and came across this:
The Texas Mile: One Mile. No Speed Limit. No Ticket. No Kidding. For a guy in the automotive performance business, this wasn't just a teaser. This was a mission. George and his crew headed to Texas for the May 2011 Texas Mile. Their secret weapon? A black 1999 BMW M Coupe. George and his team at ICS do general automotive service work, but they also specialize in custom tuning that takes performance way beyond bolt-on. George calls the BMW Coupe: Satan - The She Devil because of the sheer heat and power
that she packs. They slapped the numbers 666 on her and lined her up at the starting grid. With a Custom ICS 3.0 Liter Spec Engine by George Kaklaletris, Custom Valve Train, Custom Camshafts, Custom ICS Twin Turbo Kit (GT3071R's), Tec 3R Plug & Play. Vic Sias Tuning (siastuning.com), tune tweaked by Felix Madina for The Texas Mile, 6 Speed Euro Transmission, CM FX700
Twin Disc, ICS Custom Fuel kit and a special push by George's brother "Chipmunk" who didn't make the traveling squad to Texas this time, Kris D'agastino drove the She Devil #666 BMW M coupe past the 200+ mph mark with a best pass of 200.3 mph. And that was with a steady, 20-30 mph headwind. An impressive performance for the first time at The Texas Mile! The 200.3 mph earned George and Kris the current track record for the fastest BMW automobile at the new Texas Mile venue at Chase Field in Beeville. Congratulations to George and Kris and the ICS team. Next stop for them? The October Texas Mile, Oct. 21-23rd, 2011 in Beeville where they have set their sites on the 220 mph mark in #666.
Ralph McMullen, a local Beeville resident, decked out his black, 2004 Chevy Avalanche 1500 for his first-ever run at the May 2011 Texas Mile. Ralph works full time with youth at risk and gang kids. In his spare time, he helps his wife, Neta, run Shorty's, one of Beeville's most favorite, full-service restaurants where they have served some of the best steaks, seafood and burgers in South Texas for over 26 years.
Ralph was anointed with the need for speed early on when he started drag racing at 15.
Life got in the way. He got married and soon had to build a house instead of another engine.
Ralph said, " The Texas Mile is a great venue for people who have a passion to race. Sure, there are
a lot of professional tuners and racers here, but there are also a whole lot of every day folks. Land speed racing is very economical to go drag racing for the weekend. It's just you running that track, too. You're not fighting 25 other guys for the same real estate at the same time, like dirt track racing. You know what's neat? I can come here, tweak and tune and race like the wind and come Monday, I get in the same truck and run up to Walmart. It's great! We had a blast at The Texas Mile."
On his third pass, Ralph cranked the truck up to 131.7 mph at the 3/4 mile mark. The aluminum drive shaft hit critical rpm and said "uncle". That sank his speed to 99.7 mph at the one mile mark. Ralph took home an admirable best pass of 126.3 mph at the traps and a new carbon fiber drive shaft is all ready in the works for the October 2011 Texas Mile.
